RULES AND REGULATIONS:
Welcome to the Midwest “Show Me Funny” Comedy Competition.
You will be performing in
Preliminary Rounds begins on August 19-23, 2013 at 8 pm.
20 COMICS COMPETE FOR 2 SPOTS EACH NIGHT
4-6 MINUTES, tIME WILL DEPEND UPON THE NUMBER OF COMICS PERFORMING
Semi- Final Round begins on August 24, 2013 at 8 pm
10 COMICS COMPETE FOR 5 SPOTS FOR THE FINAL ROUND
10-12 MINUTES
Final Round will be August 25, 2013 at 8 pm.
15-20 MINUTES
All comics are expected to arrive at the host venue: THE COLISEUM 1 hour prior to their performance time.
All comics will be judged on a point system. The point system will range from 1-10 with 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest.
Comics will be judged in 4 categories, Professionalism, Originality, Stage Presence, and Creativity. (adult LANGUAGE IS UP TO YOU)
REMEMBER YOU ARE BEING JUDGED, SO TRY NOT TO USE TO MUCH
All comics are expected to perform within their allotted time. If a comic goes over their time-limit there will be a deduction of points.
Comics ARE NOT allowed to speak to any of the Judges who are judging their show. If you talk to a judge you will receive a deduction of points.
All comics are expected to do THEIR MATREIAL. Do not use Staff or Audience as your show.
All Comics are required to wear their contestant badges on their day of performances.
If you have any questions please speak with Ms. Woody (314-243 6034). DO NOT CALL Ms. Woody unless there is an emergency. Due to the large number of Comedians performing in the Competition Ms. Woody will be very busy so please be mindful.
Due to time restrictions, overall logistics and for the sake of all concerned, we must strictly enforce and ask you to adhere to the following rules:
1.) Each show's scheduled contestants must appear at the mandatory meeting prior to each show (see schedule of events for details UPON YOUR ARRIVAL ).
2.) Comedians must report to the EVENT manager no later than ONE hours before show starting time for all rounds of the Competition.
3.) The performing order will be determined by the PULL of numbers one hour prior to show time. The producers assume no responsibility or involvement in determining or assisting contestants with special show order requests.
4.) Those contestants with concerns about the performing order (once numbers have been drawn) CAN EXCHANGE NUMBERS. PLEASE speak with other contestants who have similar concerns and work out a trade. that is mutually beneficial to both parties. Trading must be completely voluntary by all parties concerned.
5.) The order will be permanently scheduled and posted 20 minutes prior to the beginning of the evening's first show. At that time all trading must stop.
6.) Those contestants who miss the mandatory meeting OR miss the drawing of numbers will be penalized. Based on the producer's discretion, the offending parties will:
a) Be automatically placed as the first contestant,
b) Be automatically placed as the last contestant or
c) Be disqualified from competing
7.) There is a zero tolerance policy for anyone caught in possession or in use of any illegal drugs, either in the official venue or at the official hotel, at any after party events or at any public place including but not limited to: parks, restaurants, bars or other establishments during the duration of the midwest show me funny Comedy Competition & Festival. Those guilty parties will be disqualified from the Competition and escorted off the premises.
8.) midwest show me funny Comedy Competition & Festival is a professional showcasing event. Those found behaving disruptively, rudely to production staff, motel staff or VENUE staff or in a manner inconsistent with (mwsmf) policies, shall be disqualified and escorted off the premises.
9.) No unauthorized video or audio recordings and no unauthorized video or audio recording devices are permitted at any (mwsmfe) Comedy Competition & Festival event, function, meeting or gathering.
SUBMISSION OF SETS:
In order to give every contestant the opportunity to showcase his/her skills, we will place comedians on shows with comedians whose acts differ from their act. THE best effort will be made to have the highest quality show and greatest diversity possible. In order to achieve this, each contestant is required to email OR MAIL A HEAD SHOT, COPY OF THEIR ACT (link or DVD) AND brief SUMMERY of their act by friday, MAY 31, 2013. please, A one-sentence-per-subject list will suffice.
TIME ALLOWANCE:
Time allowance for round 1 will be five (4-6) minutes per each contestant. Time allowance for the semi-final round will be ten (10-12) minutes for each contestant. Time allowance for the final round will be (15-20). There will be a total of (5) contestants for the Finals.
Each contestant will be given a visual warning at one minute prior to their final minute of allotted time and another when 30 seconds remains. For example: In round 1 contestants will be warned at 3 minutes and then again at 4 minutes and 30 seconds. The staff timekeeper will maintain the official time.
SCORING:
Contestants will be given a score of one (1) to ten (10) by each judge. The minimum score possible for each contestant is 3 points. The maximum score possible for each contestant is a perfect score of 30 points. Note: Due to time constraints throughout the Competition, there will be an automatic reduction of 3 points (one point per judge) for any contestant running past their time allotment. Contestants exceeding their time allotment by more than 60 seconds will be automatically disqualified.
JUDGING:
Judges will be instructed to base their scores on the following categories:
1.) Content of Material: The quality of the comedian's material. Is it original? Is it well developed? Is it thought provoking? Is it funny? (NOTE: The (MWSMFE) is a class act and seeks out professional-minded performers for the Competition. We believe in free expression. We do not censor comedian's performances, but for the sake of our audience members, blue/vulgar material is discouraged). REMEMBER YOU ARE BEING JUDGED.
2.) Audience Response: By applause and laughter, what was the judge's take on the audience's response to each comedian's performance?
3.) Presentation: How did the comedian present his/her set? Did they "stand and deliver" professionally? Were they expressive? Did the judge believe them? Were they in command or unsure or nervous? Were they dressed appropriately for their set? Did they connect with the audience?
NOTE: Due to time constraints, In the event of a tie, i.e. where two or more contestants have the same score during any round, the tie will be broken by A (3) MINUTE JOKE OFF.
APPEARANCE AND RELEASE FORM:
Prior to performing or attending any (MWSMFE) function and before appearing before video cameras or any other (MWSMFE) recording device, each contestant must complete and sign an APPEARANCE CONSENT & RELEASE FORM.
